Students receive the gift of sight this Eye Care Awareness Month

Ten Christel House students visited a professional optometrist this past month to receive a new pair of prescribed spectacles each, courtesy of a generous donation from the Shaughnessy Family Foundation. The visit was arranged by the school’s social services department, which provides professional health care for all students.

According to the official South African government website, seventy-five percent of all cases of blindness are avoidable either through prevention or through treatment. It is therefore recommended to go for eye tests at least once per year.

Eye Care Awareness Month occurs annually from 21 September to 18 October and aims to raise awareness around the importance of eye health, specifically around the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness. Eye health is especially important at school, where sight can significantly interfere with learning. We are grateful to the Shaugnessy Family Foundation for helping our students to stay focused.
