Discover inspiring journeys and achievements of our students, alumni, and school communities.

When people think about schools, they often think about classrooms, teachers, or the moment a learner graduates. But long before that moment exists, there is another moment that quietly shapes everything that follows the moment a family first encounters the possibility of belonging. At Christel House, that moment often begins with admissions.
There is a moment I witness often in my role: a parent sitting quietly in a community hall, listening as we explain what the Christel House South Africa model is and what it offers. At first, there is curiosity. Then questions. And sometimes, slowly, you see hope begin to form. For many families, that moment is their first encounter with the school, and often I am the person standing at the front of the room when it happens.
As Admissions Lead, I have come to understand that admissions at Christel House South Africa is far more than processing applications or managing enrolment numbers. Admissions is the gateway to a life-changing opportunity. It is both a strategic function and a deeply human one.
Our department provides the first experience families have with the school. We are the bridge between the vision of Christel House South Africa and the communities we serve. That responsibility means our work sits at the intersection of governance, strategy, and community engagement. But it also means something more personal.
Much of my role happens beyond the school gates. On many days, you will find me in community meetings, local schools, or speaking with parents and community leaders who want to understand what Christel House represents. These engagements are never just about sharing information. They are about building trust, answering difficult questions, and helping families see what might be possible for their children.
I remember one community meeting where a mother approached me after the session. She had listened quietly the entire time, holding onto the information leaflet we had handed out. When she finally spoke, she said softly, “I just want my child to have a chance.” In that moment, the admissions process stopped being about forms and criteria it became about the hopes that parents carry for their children every single day.
In those moments, admissions becomes advocacy. Families share their hopes and their struggles, often with a deep desire to see their children access opportunities they themselves never had. My role is to honour those stories while ensuring that the admissions process remains fair, transparent, and aligned with the mission of the school. Admissions is not simply about who applies; it is about who we ultimately invite into a community that commits to walking alongside a child for many years.
Now that the application season is open, our days take on a different rhythm. Mornings often begin with reviewing the flow of applications and ensuring that families can navigate the process successfully. Throughout the day there are calls from parents needing guidance, questions about eligibility, and conversations with colleagues across departments as we coordinate admissions cycle timelines, community campaigns, open days, assessments, and family verifications.
And in between, there are the moments that remind me why this work matters: a parent calling to say thank you for explaining the process, a learner excited about the possibility of attending Christel House South Africa, or a community leader helping us reach families who may never have heard about the opportunity before.
Our recruitment spans both our Junior School and High School, and each has its own personality. The Junior School journey is often filled with the excitement of families beginning something new. High School recruitment brings conversations with learners who are already thinking about their ambitions and the futures they want to build. Yet despite these differences, both schools are united under the same credo: a belief that every learner deserves the opportunity to realise their potential.
This is what makes admissions so meaningful to me.
It is not simply about filling seats in a classroom. It is about identifying young people whose potential deserves to be nurtured and ensuring their families understand the partnership they are entering into with Christel House.
Every application represents a story, a dream, and a possibility.
For me, serving in this role feels less like a job and more like a calling. It allows me to stand at the intersection of community and opportunity to listen to families, to advocate for them, and to help open a door that may change the trajectory of a child’s life. And that door, more often than not, begins at the admissions desk.
Because every learner admitted into Christel House represents more than a place in a classroom it is the beginning of a journey where education becomes the most powerful tool, we must break the cycle of poverty and open a future filled with possibility.
