Flood Relief Campaign Raises R165 000 for Families Affected by Western Cape Storms

Christel House SA staff support emergency flood relief effortsWhen severe storms and flooding struck the Western Cape on 11–12 May 2026, many families within the Christel House South Africa community faced devastating conditions. Homes were damaged, flooding destroyed food and essential belongings, and many families were left vulnerable as heavy rains swept across parts of Cape Town and surrounding areas.

In response, Christel House South Africa launched an emergency flood relief campaign to provide critical assistance to affected learners and their families.

Donor Community Helps Exceed Fundraising Target

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of donors, partners, and supporters, the campaign raised R165 000 — significantly exceeding its initial target of R100 000.

The funds provided critical relief to 47 families affected by the storm and enabled our organisation to respond quickly to urgent community needs.

The campaign highlighted the power of collective action and the strength of the Christel House South Africa donor community during times of crisis.

Providing Urgent Relief to Families in Need

Over the past two weeks, the organisation’s Social Services and Operations teams worked directly with affected families to assess damage and provide practical support where it was needed most.

Relief efforts included the distribution of:

    • Metal roof sheeting for damaged homes
    • Plastic sheeting and tarpaulins to protect against further rain damage
    • Sand and sandbags to help prevent additional flooding
    • Blankets and warm clothing
    • Food parcels and essential toiletries

    Supporting Families Beyond the Classroom

Christel House South Africa serves learners from underserved communities across Cape Town through a comprehensive no-fee education and support programme.

In addition to quality education, our organisation provides services such as daily meals, transport, healthcare, psychosocial support, and family assistance programmes designed to help learners overcome barriers linked to poverty and inequality.

The recent flood response reflects our communities ongoing commitment to standing alongside families during moments of crisis and uncertainty.

Thank You to Our Donors and Partners

This response would not have been possible without the compassion and partnership of our donor community. Thank you for standing with our students and families when they needed it most.
