From Classrooms to Life: New Documentary Showcases How Christel House Is Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

A powerful new documentary is shining an international spotlight on how Christel House is transforming lives through education, holistic support and long-term investment in children and families.

Produced by Christel House International, From Classrooms to Life highlights this unique approach and the life-changing impact it has had on thousands of children and families across South Africa, India, Jamaica and Mexico.

Released during Youth Month in South Africa, From Classrooms to Life explores how long-term investment in children and their families can create pathways to opportunity and economic mobility. It features the stories of students, alumni and families whose lives have been transformed through access to education, healthcare, nutrition, psychosocial support and career development. The film also features reflections from our CEO and staff members, offering a personal perspective on the profound impact this work has on the lives of young people and their communities.

Our CEO, Adri Marais, reflects: “Talent is universal, but opportunity is not. When children are given the support they need and systemic barriers are removed, extraordinary things become possible.”

How Christel House South Africa Breaks the Cycle of Poverty

For many children growing up in low-income communities such as the Cape Flats, simply attending school is not enough to overcome the effects of poverty. Challenges such as hunger, inadequate healthcare, trauma, unsafe environments and limited access to transport often prevent children from reaching their full potential.

Christel House South Africa addresses these barriers by providing the support children need before meaningful learning can take place.

Our main admissions criterion is based on socio-economic vulnerability, ensuring that children with the greatest need have access to our holistic model.

Today, Christel House South Africa serves 1,006 learners from Grade RR to Grade 12, supports more than 230 alumni up to the age of 23, and works with families through comprehensive social support services designed to strengthen the home environment. This long-term investment enables learners not only to succeed academically but also to build sustainable futures beyond the classroom.

    An Award-Winning Documentary

Produced by Vanessa Lanci and directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Paul Burger, with cinematography by Emmy Award-winning Michael Gomes, the film is about more than education, From Classrooms to Life is a story about human potential and what becomes possible when children are given the opportunity and support to succeed.
