Manenberg Learner Selected for Under-15 Girls Provincial Soccer Team

Grade 7 learner Vaughan J from Manenberg has achieved a remarkable milestone after being selected for the Under-15 Girls Provincial Soccer Team, a testament to her dedication, talent, and perseverance both on and off the field.

Vaughan, a student at Christel House South Africa, plays as a midfielder for both FC Salvo Soccer Club and our school’s soccer team. Known for her composure under pressure, she has consistently demonstrated the qualities required to compete at the highest levels of youth soccer.

Her achievement is particularly inspiring given the challenges faced by many young people growing up in Manenberg, a community often affected by gang-related violence and limited opportunities.

Reflecting on her experiences, Vaughan shares:

“When I want to play outside, my mom always says I must stay inside because of the gang-related shootings. Just last week, they shot an innocent man, and he passed away.”

Despite these realities, Vaughan remains focused on her education and her sporting ambitions. While she dreams of excelling in soccer, her long-term goal is to become a doctor and contribute positively to her community.

“I want to help people and make a difference,” she says.

Behind Vaughan’s determination is a strong support system. Her mother, Melissa Jackson, is currently studying towards a Social Work degree at the University of Cape Town while actively serving her community. Her commitment to education and social upliftment has helped shape Vaughan’s resilience and belief that a better future is possible.

Vaughan’s success also reflects the impact of holistic support and opportunity. As a learner at Christel House South Africa, she benefits from a comprehensive model that provides not only quality education, but also nutrition, healthcare, psychosocial support, transport, career guidance, and access to extracurricular activities, helping students overcome barriers associated with poverty and realise their full potential.

Rosco Hendricks, Head of Sport and Physical Education at our Junior School, has played an important role in developing Vaughan’s soccer abilities.

“We are incredibly proud of Vaughan and all that she has achieved. Her commitment, discipline and passion for the game have earned her this opportunity, and we look forward to seeing what she accomplishes next.”

For Vaughan, every training session, every match, and every school day is another step towards a brighter future. Her selection to the provincial team is not only a personal achievement but also a powerful reminder of what can happen when talent is nurtured, opportunities are created, and young people are given the support they need to thrive.

As she takes to the field wearing provincial colours, Vaughan carries with her the hopes of her family, her school, and her community—proving that where you come from does not define where you can go.
